Bathing is a Fundamental Human Action.

Our connection to water is primordial. Water House serves as a temple to the unescapable bond we all share. Water House sets its precedent in the civic typology of the Roman Bath House, utilizing concrete and the various configurations of the barrel vault typical in Roman construction. The heavy, concrete structure is carved into the earth, as if carved from the white limestone bed it is constructed upon. The form is derived from its concession to human comfort, function, and need. Sun angles in union with the vaulted form carve out space in the building, coordinating with windows and skylights to receive solar exposure during different times of the year, working as an internal calendar. These light wells are linked to each temperature pool in Water House that would best suit the need of the season. During the summer, the cold pools are receiving light, in the spring and fall the ambient pools, and the hot pools during the winter. The programs within Water House are separated into two distinct categories: wet and dry. The wet levels are the main pool floor area located on the ground floor and the below cistern level. The cistern level becomes a play on hygiene, as what was once known as an area dedicated to disposal of waste, it becomes an area of cleanliness and play. The dry level programs are separated and placed to maintain comfort for those functions and activities. The structure comes to life because the user occupies it.

Therefore, it is defined by their needs.
